5 books, 5 songs!

Hi Poppie here,

One of my favourite things to do is listen to music throughout the day. Whilst at the Imaginarium for work experience, I thought I would combine two of my favourite things, reading and music! So here are five songs that I’ve paired up with books. I’ve added a little bit about why I think the books match, and a link so you can listen to the songs.

A Court of Silver Flames – Little bit by Lykke Li

A Court of Silver Flames is the fifth book in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series. It’s from Nesta’s perspective though, and we get a better insight into her thoughts, emotions and actions. Nesta Archeron has always been prickly – proud, swift to anger and slow to forgive.

The song I’ve chosen is Little Bit by Lykke Li because the lyrics seem to fit Nesta well. The first verse goes I'm too proud for love/ But with eyes shut/ It's you I'm thinking of. If that’s not Nesta, I don’t what is.

There are more lyrics that would fit, if you have read the book would probably understand!

The invisible life of Addie LaRue – Lonely Day by System of a Down

Addie LaRue makes a bargain for immortality, but a side effect is that she won’t be remembered by anyone after 5 seconds. She spent centuries alone, looking for a connection.

The song I’ve chosen is Lonely Day by System of a Down and here’s my reasoning.

The line “If you go, I want to go with you, and if you die, I want to die I want to die with you”.  Because of the bargain she made, she spent centuries alone with no one to remember her, until she met Henry who remembered her.

One dark window – Control by Halsey

Set in a mist-locked kingdom, Elspeth needs more than luck to stay safe but has a monster instead she calls him the Nightmare a spirit trapped in her head. On a dangerous quest to save the town from dark magic, Elspeth struggles as the Nightmare is slowly taking over her mind.

For one dark window I think Control by Halsey because…

It’s a dark song; the song talks about mental health even though the main protagonist hasn’t got issues with their mental health the voice makes her feel bad and guilty no matter what she does. The lyric “My mind is like a deadly disease” connects to how Elspeth must feel because of The Nightmare slowly taking over her mind.

City of brass – Cop Car by Mitski

Set in 18 century Cairo, Nahri is practised in swindling Ottoman nobles. But when she accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious, Djinn she is forced to accept that magic exists and it sweeps her into an adventure to the legendary City of Brass

Cop Car by Mitski is a song with a ton of emotion one of the lyrics say, “I don’t think about the past, it’s always there anyway.” links up with how Nahri is ignorant of past. The song deals with themes of vulnerability and strength which sums up with Nahri as a character.

Fourth wing – What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger by Kelly Clarkson

Fourth wing is about Violet attending a brutal war collage to become a dragon rider but has weaknesses that could end up with her killed. But she fights on and trains every day to be a stronger dragon rider.

Reasoning; the title says it all. Violet works hard every day to overcome her weaknesses and become stronger.
