The Nevernight Chronicle by Jay Kristoff - A Series Review

I have never given a series a full 5 star rating for every book…until now. The Nevernight Chronicle by Jay Kristoff has become the first series I have ever read that has had a 5 star rating for all three books in the series. But it’s finally happened. I could never have predicted this as I actually did have some doubts while reading the first two books, as I will admit it did take me at least a month to get through the books, but every single time those doubts were proven so so wrong.

Through this trilogy we follow Mia Corvere, an orphaned girl, raised on betrayal and revenge. In the first book (the only one I can really talk about as I don’t plan on giving spoilers) Mia is making her way to the infamous Red Church of Itreya, the school for assassins, so that she can hone herself into a weapon powerful enough to avenge her family and take down the ones responsible. Faced with the deadliest of opponents, Mia must prove herself and survive against murderers, liars and the daemons at the heart of a murder cult.

The first book was everything I wanted and more. Mia is an absolutely incredible character, despite her ambitions she has a lot of depth to her. I couldn’t help but emphasize with her motivations. In true Jay Kristoff fashion, this series a fair bit of humour which made the book even more of a joy to read and also apparently footnotes which at first I couldn’t come to grips with but eventually came to love.

I claim to be quite soulless when it comes to books, I don’t tend to get emotional and never really show it if I do but this series was an emotional rollercoaster. The twists throughout and at the end of each and every book either had me sobbing, screaming, gasping or a combination of all of the above. I was continually messaging Robyn (who recommended the series to me) in all caps whenever something shocked me to the core, which was a lot…I would love to go into more detail about everything however that would spoil things and I think this is a series that you’ll just have to read and find out for yourself what kind of journey it is.

The Nevernight Chronicles is a completed trilogy in paperback and one you should all take the time to read!
